Why does my skin's production of sebum fluctuate?

75% of the time my skin literally oozes sebum which makes my hair constantly greasy and causes acne. Sometimes (for periods of several days to a week) I produce what I would call normal levels of sebum - during which time I have little to no acne, I feel much less dirty and greasy and I don't have to wash my hair religously. I don't think anything major changes in my diet, nor does my lifestyle change significantly during these times. Sometimes I'm blessed with normal sebum production levels for weeks. What could be causing these fluctuations, and is there anything i could do (bar castrating myself!) to normalise sebum production levels? Why does my skin's production of sebum fluctuate?
It's not known what causes the increased production of sebum that leads to acne. But a number of factors 鈥?including hormones, bacteria, certain medications and heredity 鈥?play a role.

Contrary to what some people think, foods have little effect on acne. Acne also isn't caused by dirt. In fact, scrubbing the skin too hard or cleansing with harsh soaps or chemicals can cause irritation, which may make acne worse.
